Checkups and Health Insurance

Checkups can seem like a waste of time if you’re really busy, but they can help prevent life threatening diseases by spotting them while they are still treatable. Some checkups are costly, especially if you don’t know what’s wrong, and it’s tempting to try to save money by “waiting until next year” for your annual checkup. Having health insurance means that you can get regular checkups without worrying about another bill. You’ll still have to make time in your busy schedule to visit the doctor, but at least you won’t have to work the weekends to cover the cost.

Regular checkups can help with a wide array of problems. They can help prevent disease, catch cancer in the earlier stages, and remind you to watch your eating habits and stay in shape. Checkups are important because your doctor can’t help you stay healthy if you never visit.

Here are a few of the kinds of health insurance that you can get.

  • Group Health Insurance is great if you’re part of a big company. Businesses can get lower costs based on the number of people covered. Check with your employer to see if you qualify. This type of insurance also encourages businesses to keep their employees in good shape, as they can pay lower health premiums that way.
  • Individual Health Insurance is by far the most expensive type of insurance you can get, but it also covers the biggest number of health issues. Even if you’re part of a company and get Group Health Insurance, Individual Health Insurance can be used if you need larger coverage on the side.

There are many other types of insurance, but you may want to consider your budget first. Online insurance quotes can give you a good idea of what coverage you can get for the price you can pay. You’ll have more options and be able to go to those checkups — and live a longer and healthier life.

Addiction: is it a Disease?

If you have ever gone to a forum where they have discussed the topic of addiction, you have most likely been exposed to some heavily polarized debating. On the one hand, you have the people who believe that addiction is a disease, and that because of this they are not wholly responsible for their actions. But on the other hand, you will also hear the side of the debate that says that addicts are simply people who want to feel good, choose to do drugs, and choose to do criminal acts in order to finance their habits. Both sides will no doubt cite facts and figures which prove that their side is the more true. And ultimately, the debate will rage onward into deciding whether the government or whether insurance companies should be paying for the treatment of people’s addictions.

While it is true that the addict will always choose to do what they ultimately do (including illegal acts for the support of their habits), this is a gross oversimplification of the problem at hand. In the end, it comes down to whether or not the addict is in a state of mind where they can be held completely responsible for what they do. And whether you believe that the government of the insurance companies should end up footing the bill, you do not have to resolve that problem for the rest of the country (thankfully). You can, however, resolve it for yourself.

If you go to Rehab-International.org, you can look up all sorts of different rehab centers. If either you or someone you love is suffering from an addiction, you can actually choose between working with your insurance company for help in paying for the solution, or you can look into government sponsored addiction solutions. While neither one is going to be a perfect solution for everyone, having the ability to choose the type that you believe in should help your decision a lot.

Herbal Remedies Don’t Remedy

Many people are turning to herbal remedies like Echinacea in order to feel better faster, and help cure the common cold. There is new research that confirms that herbal remedies will not actually get you feeling better any faster than what rest already do. There were seven hundred study participants, and both adults and children responded the same.

The study suggested that the only improvement made, if any, was about a half of a full day for what would be a week of flu symptoms. For the price of the herbal remedies, getting a few short hours being symptom free usually wont be a great incentive to buy the costly products, not to mention the fact that a lot of the herbal remedies available are costly for a small supply. Past studies have shown that remedies like Echinacea don’t really do anything, and others have shown a small improvement. Any small sign of improvement may have been a product of the same result as the placebo effect; because people assume they are being treated with something that will help them, they seem to feel better after treatment.

With the fact that there is no cure for the common cold, patients will have to settle for rest and a lot of liquids. For those who want a herbal remedy, try one of Mom’s old favorites – ginger ale and plenty of sleep. The flu is contagious, so be courteous to other people, and remain inside until you feel well enough to join society again. If you have your heart and soul set on taking a herbal remedy, make sure your consulting physician is aware of what you are taking in order to monitor your health, as it is important not to mix certain things with prescription or over the counter medication.

The Swine Flu

The swine flu epidemic hit the United States in 2009. The powerful H1N1 flu had many people running to their doctors with just a slight cold. It also had other people in the hospital due to intense sickness. The swine flu originated in pigs and was then transferred to humans.

Swine flu is a very ordinary virus in pigs through out the world. The virus does not typically transfer to humans, and when it does it doesn’t necessarily always make someone sick with influenza. People who have prolonged exposure to pigs are at more of a risk to contract swine flu. However, the meat of an infected animal won’t get someone sick if it is properly cooked.

When someone is infected with swine flu there is nothing a physician can really do except test to see if it is actually a strain of the swine flu. There is no known cure or treatment for this sickness. The best advice someone with the swine flu will receive is to get a lot of rest and drink a lot of liquids. If your condition gets worse, do as you would normally do in that situation: go to the hospital and get checked.

The swine flu mimics normal flu symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, congestion, and so on. Ginger is a known relaxant and will make you feel more comfortable. Combined with Tylenol or Advil and a lot of rest, you should be better in no time. Don’t do anything strenuous while you are sick, as adding pressure to your body does not help you get better. If you do get sick, or if you start feeling sick, stay home, get rest, and stay away from public places and other people. You do not want to risk the chance of getting other people sick.

Arthritis in Kids?

When most people hear the word “arthritis,” the first thought that comes to their mind is not a child. Most people may even think of a parent, or grandparent, or maybe themselves if they have had to deal with the disease. But most people don’t imagine that this pain can be prevalent in children. It is a scary diagnosis for parents to hear. Before hitting the panic button, find out for sure if this is the correct diagnosis.

The common symptoms of arthritis are fever, swelling, pain, and an unexplainable rash. It is a surprising fact that nearly three hundred thousand children in the United States suffer from arthritis. However, what most people don’t know is that arthritis isn’t necessarily a permanent issue; it can go away. Some arthritis can last weeks, others months and years, and for some unfortunate patients it is a lifelong illness. Some children are simply unaware that they even have arthritis.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the red blood cells don’t know the difference between good cells and bad cells. Thus, the body reacts to healthy tissue and ends up destroying itself slowly, which results in swelling, pain, rash, and fever. JRA is treated by medication, physical therapy, exercise, and a balanced diet. In some extreme cases the child may require injections to relieve pain.

Ibuprofen (i.e. Advil or Motrin) is used to treat pain and reduce swelling. There are also other prescription drugs that a physician can prescribe. Physical therapy is necessary with every type of arthritis; many physical therapists use range-of-motion and other exercises to help joints and restore strength. Exercise helps keep the body strong and helps improve arthritis pain through endurance. Arthritis is no small concern, and a patient should consult a physician before making any dramatic changes to their lifestyle.

What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that has been around since before modern medicine existed. It is in fact one of the oldest practices in alternative medicine that is still practiced around the world. Acupuncture is thought to have originated from China, although there are places other than China who have records of practicing this ancient art.

For most people who undergo acupuncture, it is used in order to treat pain or tension.
Acupuncture is the manipulation of certain parts of the body though the use of sticking tiny needles into specific points. Practitioners in the United States use a number of methods that have been brought from numerous places around the world, although acupuncture is still mostly associated with Chinese medicine.

There have been controlled trials to prove what merit acupuncture has, and according to some it has proved relatively useful for headaches and low back pain.
However, there are other trials that state that acupuncture seems just as effective as the placebo effect, and the results may be in fact similar to the reaction people have during the placebo effect, although it may relieve stress and anxiety for some which will affect the way the body perceives pain. Few studies have any real conclusive results in one direction or the other.

Many people who have lost faith in modern medicine or in doctors turn to unconventional medicine like acupuncture to relieve pain and stress. Some people think that it is a cure all and seek it to cure specific ailments that may actually need other treatment. It is not advised to attempt acupuncture on your own at home. It is also recommended that you seek out trained individuals who may have a certification to show you before you allow someone to practice acupuncture. If you intend on undergoing acupuncture make sure to consult your physician.

Effective Treatments for Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are one of the most common issues among highly active people. It is not just a minor inconvenience when one or both of your knees are in pain. With so many people searching for relief it is not surprising that people turn to drugs like Advil and Tylenol. However, there are also many other types of remedies.

There are many people who now turn to alternative medicines to solve everyday issues. It has been hinted that acupuncture can relieve knee pain that is due to osteoarthritis. For those who are still a little skeptical about new and possibly unusual treatments there are medications that can be properly prescribed by medical professionals, and of course the over-the-counter alternatives.

Those who have more serious injures or recurring problems often turn to physical therapy. Specialists work with patients to tone and strengthen tendons and muscles around the knee. Often physical therapists will use electroshock therapy in conjunction with physical therapy. This form of treatment involves two or three round discs that are placed on the muscles connected to the knee cap. Waves of electricity are sent through the discs from a machine that is attached to them. This may sound scary at first, but it feels like a small vibrating pinch that you get comfortable with after a minute or two.

There are people who have to continually see specialists for their knees. Others may just find a quality brace and wear it any time they are more active. Some chose a combination of therapy, medication, and a brace to solve their knee problems. Depending on the problem, there are people who, even after all of the treatment and therapy, still end up having knee replacement surgery. In any case, there are a wide variety of options for treatment to consult a doctor about.

Alternative Medicine and Our Health

Alternative medicine is a field that has traditionally been viewed with skepticism, but in recent years it has become a more mainstream and accepted approach to health care. Today, around
40 percent of adults and 12 percent of children in America use some form of alternative medicine, which is more than 30 thousand people. What is it about alternative medicine that is so appealing to all of these people?

Alternative medicine often offers a low cost approach to treating medical problems. People who are undergoing credit counseling or have found themselves in debt might be interested in new age solutions for this reason. Other people may find the resulting benefits to their overall health and fitness to be just as satisfying or even more so than traditional medical practices.

Who are the people deciding to go with alternative therapies? Research shows that people aged 40–60, women, and people with higher income levels or higher educational backgrounds are using these treatments more frequently. Occasionally, these people even use alternative medicines to replace conventional medical treatments. Some people combine non-traditional medicine with western medicine in order to curb side effects or to create a balanced wellness plan.

Many people use yoga, meditation, and many other therapies, such as those that utilize art and music, to promote better emotional and mental health. Some people simply take the time to focus and clear their minds instead of taking over-the-counter medication for headaches, and according to recent studies, this method proves to be just as effective. For others, root therapy and medicinal herbs could be a valuable and inexpensive solution for the same
problems.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) calls practices such as massage therapy, chiropractic therapy, and osteopathy “manipulative and body-based practices.” Even the people who take part in these practices, who otherwise may not be seeking alternative solutions to medical issues, can agree that their own favored alternative solutions are both relaxing and rewarding.

Staying healthy is one of those obvious things that seemingly everyone would want to take seriously. Unfortunately, for far too many people today, the stresses of life seem to cause many people to neglect this essential personal responsibility. If you can discover some simple tips for living a healthy life that will be easy to do, perhaps that will get you jump-started on a path to a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some simple steps to take:

1. Maintain your ideal BMI, or Body Mass Index. Most physicians advise people to keep this number between 18.5 and 24.5. This number relates to the percentage of overall body fat your body holds. Some of the best ways to maintain this number include taking vitamins, having a proper balance of proteins, minerals and carbohydrates, and regulating sugar and cholesterol levels. These and other steps will help to prevent your BMI from going beyond the standard levels.

2. Daily exercise not only helps with weight management, but it also increases the endorphins in the body. These are the chemicals that help us to feel energetic while also decreasing stress levels. The number typically mentioned for the amount of exercise needed on a weekly basis is at least 30 minutes a day, on at least three days each week.

3. Sleep makes a tremendous difference in our health and well-being. Most doctors advise that people should get at least 7 hours each night. This can vary depending on the needs of the individual. This is also an important way to increase energy and decrease stress levels.

4. Avoid alcohol if at all possible. Alcohol is believed to lead to weight gain and a decreased immunity to illness.  Alcoholism is also a very real threat, especially when alcohol is used excessively.

5. Closely related to this is the use of tobacco. The number of people who die from tobacco-related diseases is in the hundreds of thousands each year.

There are seemingly unlimited tips, suggestions, and great ideas for getting into better shape. In the United States alone, billions of dollars are spent each on diets, fitness club memberships, and other healthy lifestyle products and services. But you don’t have to spend a penny to get into better shape, unless of course you want to. By simply starting where you are and with whatever you might have on hand, you can begin the journey toward being in better shape and feeling healthier than you have in a long time. Here are some guidelines for getting started today.

The first step is to assess your fitness level. This will help you to determine the level at which it will safe for you to begin your fitness program. Be sure to do the following as part of this assessment:

Find out what your pulse rate is before and after walking one mile.
Determine how long it takes you to walk at an elevated pace for one mile.
Find out how far you can reach forward while sitting on the floor with your legs stretched out straight in front of you.
How many push-ups you can do without stopping.
Learn what your BMI or Body Mass Index is.
What is the circumference of your waist when measured from your naval?

Once you’ve done these steps, the next thing to do is to establish a fitness program. Again, simple and doable is best.

Start by determining what your fitness goals are. What is it that you want to achieve in thirty days? Three months? One year?
Plan what your activities will be, and how often you will do them.
How can you make these activities are part of your daily living?
Determine what some new activities might be, and plan to try them.
Especially important for you to write down your goals and plans. A goal not written is only a wish. Success comes to the persistent.
