Health Tips for Managing and Eliminating Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common and universal physical ailments people suffer from. They can range from a mild throbbing pain in the front of the head to a completely debilitating migraine that leaves a person helpless for hours or even days.

Since this is such a universal problem, there are a wide variety of suggestions for how to prevent and to manage headaches when they occur. Here are a few of the more common ones to try, along with some you may not have though before:

Stop whatever it is you are working on at the first signs of a headache. It is commonly understood that the earlier one acts to prevent a headache, the more likely you are to decrease both the time and the intensity of the pain.

Take pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other over-the-counter pain relief medications. If you have been given medication by a physician to help with the side-effects of headaches, then take your prescriptions as directed by your doctor

Begin a stress-relief program that works for you. If this includes exercise, adequate sleep, changes to your diet, or other common-sense solutions, then adhere to these steps.

If it will help, get a massage from a licensed professional or even from your spouse or partner. Headaches are often caused by muscle tension. Massages can be some of the most effective ways to reduce this ailment and in turn can also help to relieve or even eliminate headaches.

Put yourself in time out. This is a simple but sometimes seldom followed suggestion. Medical advances in the field of joint replacement

If you have aches and pains that are going to necessitate surgery but you’ve been holding back for fear the process might be too invasive, it might be time to check new advances in the field of joint replacement.
Let’s face it, the thought of lying in bed for two months after a knee of hip replacement just isn’t that appealing.  Some fear the thought of their femur getting sawed in half and a giant incision to replace that hip that’s been bothering for years, while others fear the long rehabilitative process that comes following major knee surgery.
With advances in technology, some in the Medical field are looking at new ways to give patients comfort, without going under the knife.
Many surgeons in this delicate Medical field are turning to alternate solutions that inject jells and other fluids into problem areas to give major relief.  Prior to the start of the NFL football season, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre had his surgically repaired ankle, ‘lubricated’ in order to give relief to the certain NFL Hall-of-Famer.
Others in this Medical field are investigating new ways to remove cells from an injured area, and then grow new cartilage or meniscus’s for damaged knees.  After the cells are scraped from the injured area, they are grown in a laboratory environment before being transplanted into the injured patient’s knee.
The technology is new, and in some cases doesn’t work if an injured area is incapable of producing healthy cells.  However, for those able to garner relief from these types of medical procedures, the relief is instantaneous and gives patients a successful transplant without removing more of the problem area.

Life spans have increased considerably since medical advances such as antibiotics and vaccines were first invented. The modern world has made us better informed on how to prevent diseases and treat existing health problems. Taking a broader view of human history one might say homo-sapiens have come a long way from standing upright and using stone tools. Only in the relatively recent and short span of time in terms of natural history has our species reaped the benefits of understanding human biology; imagine what is to come: will 100 be the new 90 in a couple of decades?

But then there is the all important issue of economics in terms of health care and its availability to the greater masses. As health care has evolved among many of the leading industrialized nations into more of a business and less of a public service, modern medicine now seems to dedicate more and more of its limited and very valuable resources in search for syndromes and illnesses for drug prescription and medication rather than proper treatment. Instead of addressing the cause of many of our modern society’s current ills, is the modern medicine more interested in addressing the symptoms and lining the pockets of the billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry rather than attending to the cause resulting in a cure?

Children are medicated regularly; teenagers are fed uppers and then downers for behavior that in the past may have simply been successfully addressed without medicines or better adult interaction. As medicine is made more and more mainstream will our present generation and generations to come become healthier or just more medicated?

When attending to the weaker and the frail in our society becomes profit-driven, the motivation for addressing these ills is no longer with the best interests of the patient in mind. Basic health care and the wellness of our citizens should not be a privilege but rather a right.
