The human body is often compared to an automobile. In particular, this comparison works in relation to having a program of regular maintenance in place to keep your car on the road and functioning properly. Although a car may run for awhile if not maintained, the consequences of such action will eventually and inevitably lead to a breakdown if not corrected. Our bodies are much the same. Although remarkably durable, they too require a maintenance program in order to function at an optimum level.

Just as a mechanic would likely ask a series of questions to determine what is wrong with someone’s car, it would also be helpful for each of us to ask ourselves some questions to provoke needed change to our lifestyles. Here are just a few to get you started.

Do you have regular checkups with your doctor?

Do you take vitamins or other supplements to insure your diet is a healthy one?

Do you have an exercise program in place and are you following it closely?

Do you smoke and/or drink alcohol, and if so, are you aware of the heightened risks of disease associated with these behaviors?

Do you have methods for relieving stress in your life, and do you follow them?

In addition to these questions, there are also some common-sense guidelines that can be easily followed in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle. They include the following:

1. Make sure you eat a healthy diet, with an emphasis on leafy greens and whole grains. Also be sure and drink plenty of water.

2. At least 30 minutes of exercise a day for at least five days a week is considered optimum. But any effort is better than none at all.

3. If you are a smoker, get help and stop now! This is one of the most beneficial lifestyle changes you might ever make to improve your health. And it will make your pocketbook healthier as well!

Staying healthy is one of those obvious things that seemingly everyone would want to take seriously. Unfortunately, for far too many people today, the stresses of life seem to cause many people to neglect this essential personal responsibility. If you can discover some simple tips for living a healthy life that will be easy to do, perhaps that will get you jump-started on a path to a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some simple steps to take:

1. Maintain your ideal BMI, or Body Mass Index. Most physicians advise people to keep this number between 18.5 and 24.5. This number relates to the percentage of overall body fat your body holds. Some of the best ways to maintain this number include taking vitamins, having a proper balance of proteins, minerals and carbohydrates, and regulating sugar and cholesterol levels. These and other steps will help to prevent your BMI from going beyond the standard levels.

2. Daily exercise not only helps with weight management, but it also increases the endorphins in the body. These are the chemicals that help us to feel energetic while also decreasing stress levels. The number typically mentioned for the amount of exercise needed on a weekly basis is at least 30 minutes a day, on at least three days each week.

3. Sleep makes a tremendous difference in our health and well-being. Most doctors advise that people should get at least 7 hours each night. This can vary depending on the needs of the individual. This is also an important way to increase energy and decrease stress levels.

4. Avoid alcohol if at all possible. Alcohol is believed to lead to weight gain and a decreased immunity to illness.  Alcoholism is also a very real threat, especially when alcohol is used excessively.

5. Closely related to this is the use of tobacco. The number of people who die from tobacco-related diseases is in the hundreds of thousands each year.

Health Tips for Managing and Eliminating Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common and universal physical ailments people suffer from. They can range from a mild throbbing pain in the front of the head to a completely debilitating migraine that leaves a person helpless for hours or even days.

Since this is such a universal problem, there are a wide variety of suggestions for how to prevent and to manage headaches when they occur. Here are a few of the more common ones to try, along with some you may not have though before:

Stop whatever it is you are working on at the first signs of a headache. It is commonly understood that the earlier one acts to prevent a headache, the more likely you are to decrease both the time and the intensity of the pain.

Take pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other over-the-counter pain relief medications. If you have been given medication by a physician to help with the side-effects of headaches, then take your prescriptions as directed by your doctor
.
Begin a stress-relief program that works for you. If this includes exercise, adequate sleep, changes to your diet, or other common-sense solutions, then adhere to these steps.

If it will help, get a massage from a licensed professional or even from your spouse or partner. Headaches are often caused by muscle tension. Massages can be some of the most effective ways to reduce this ailment and in turn can also help to relieve or even eliminate headaches.

Put yourself in time out. This is a simple but sometimes seldom followed suggestion. Especially for sufferer of migraines, eliminating exposure to light sources as well as to loud noises can have a significant impact on the intensity and duration of headaches of all kinds, but especially for migraine sufferers.

Try peppermint oil. Although not proven by medical science, many who suffer from headaches have indicated that this has helped to relieve or to eliminate their suffering.

News and Information about all healthcare issues continues to be negative

As these challenging economic times continue to wreak havoc with the U.S. economy, the News and information about all healthcare issues continues to be grim.
With companies downsizing and looking for ways to cut costs, many workers are forced to put in their 40 hours without the benefits of health insurance.  Without this necessary insurance, many are forced to skip doctor appointments, annual checkups, visits to the dentist and other necessary items that are just too expensive to endure.
For many, the thought of a major medical emergency like cancer is almost too much too bear. Many questions about what to do if the kids get sick keep families awake at night without the knowledge that their family or children would be covered if a disaster strikes.
Just how big of a problem are the uninsured in the United States.
In 2009, in a study published on and NPR website, data suggest that in 2009 253.6 million Americans had insurance compared to 255.1 million people in 2008.  Not only are there millions of Americans without insurance, the numbers continue to drop.  It is believed that over 50 million people in the United States live and get by without health insurance.
Ever check out individual insurance rates?  It seems like a difficult proposition for a family making less that $2000 per month to spend 1/4th of that on health insurance.  $500 per month for health insurance, REALLY?
Changes are coming thought as President Barack Obama signed a health care bill into law in 2010.  It remains to be seen whether Americans will be better served to have health insurance or be forced to dip into their already short money supply to get it.  It is believed the new health insurance laws will give coverage to over 30 million American’s who currently do not have insurance.

Medical issues arising from America’s obesity problems

It’s no secret that the people in the United States are getting bigger.  It’s also no secret that hectic lifestyles and frequent trips to the drive-through are compounding these problems by limiting exercise and contributing to individual’s weight gain.
For those that have risen to the morbidly obese category, the litany of Medical problems is long and not so promising.  On NBC’s hit show, ‘The Biggest Loser’, every contestant is given a complete physical.  What the doctors on the Biggest Loser are finding are lessened life-spans for the contestants due to a number of probable Medical problems.
The following are Medical problems arising from obesity.
For those that are severely overweight, they are more susceptible to:  Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Diabetes and Type II Diabetes, Cancer, Gallbladder disease and gallstones, Osteoarthritis and Gout.
Those top four are eye-popping with the heart-disease and stroke at the top of the list.
Fortunately, many of these Medical problems are reversible with proper diet and exercise.  On the Biggest Loser, contestants are given another physical after they have lost significant amounts of weight.   What the doctors find then are reduced Medical problems and improvements in heart-disease and risk of diabetes.  In some cases, the contestants are removed from medicines they have been taking for years as their weight drops and their health improves.
Eating better and exercise are two of the keys that improve the Medical conditions for many suffering from obesity.   Portion size and not eating late at night seem to be the two no-no’s in the eating world.  Even Oprah Winfrey says you have to go to bed hungry if you want to lose weight.
Although exercise might seem intimidating at first, the process to improving your Medical conditions begins when you take those first few steps toward a lifetime of health and wellness.

Patient Protection in Assisted Living Environments

Whether you are entering an assisted living facility because you need to downgrade your lifestyle or you are entering for a rehabilitation program, the fact is that it can be a very scary move. You are leaving a lifestyle that you are comfortable and used to and moving to a new situation.

Not many people are ready to make that move to assisted living facilities and therefore are unprepared for that new part of their life.

Here is a quick look at two of the most common items that people do not know about assisted living facilities.

You can keep your same doctor. Assisted living facilities will have an assigned doctor for the whole building. Sometimes it is presented to people that you have to go with that doctor. That is not the case at all. As long as you have a friend or family member who is willing to take you to your doctor’s visits you are able to keep your doctor from before you entered the facility. Of course, if there is an emergency you will have to go with the facility doctor, but for continual visits you can continue to go to your regular doctor.

You will lose your rights and freedom in a facility. Many elderly people believe that once they enter an assisted living facility that you lose all freedoms and rights that you used to have. That is not the case at all. You are allowed to come and go at an assisted living facility as you please. Some require that you let the center know if you are leaving but only so they know how to properly prepare your medications and not because you aren’t allowed to go. You are also allowed to do what you want, engage in what activities you want and other items. You are in control of your life at an assisted living facility.

Weight Problems May Start in the Womb

Image via Wikipedia

A new study now shows that weight problems in children may start as early as the womb. Some women, when pregnant, tend to gain more weight than is necessary to produce a healthy baby. The latest studies show that excessive weight gain can now result in larger babies, which then sets them up to be overweight and experience problems later on such as diabetes and heart disease.

According to the Institute of Medicine, in 2009 more than one-third of normal weight women and more than half of overweight women gained more weight than was necessary during pregnancy. The newest study done on this surveyed over 500,000 women. The normal weight gain for a pregnant woman ranges anywhere from 25 to 35 pounds for normal weight women. Women who gained 53 pounds or more were twice as likely to have babies weighing more than nine pounds at birth. For every 2.2 pounds gained by the mother during pregnancy, the baby’s birth weight went up by one-fourth of an ounce.

The number of high-birth-weight babies being born has gone up dramatically, according to the study. It also found that more women are now overweight before pregnancy, and then gaining a significant amount during their pregnancy and then producing overweight babies. The study also suggests that more women need to lose weight before they get pregnant, so that the extra weight added on during pregnancy doesn’t affect the overall health of their baby.

A study conducted in Britain found that by age 9, the children of women who gained more weight than they were supposed to, were more overweight than the other children their age and had high blood pressure, as well as a risk for heart disease. They also tended to get sick more often than other children did.

If you want a healthy baby, make sure to only gain the recommended amount of weight. This may help save your baby’s life later on down the road.

Children With Autism

Image via Wikipedia

Autism is a disorder that causes some children to experience the world differently than other children do. Children with autism often have a hard time communicating with people. Autism is considered a complex developmental disability and it affects a child’s communication and social skills.

Some children will experience mild symptoms while others have severe symptoms. No two people though, have the same symptoms. A child with autism will have trouble communicating with others, and may often appear clumsy with their interactions with peers. They will often be defensive or even off-the-wall with some of the comments they make.

Children with autism will often make little or no eye contact, and their teachers and healthcare workers must work to teach them early on that eye contact is very important. A child with autism has a hard time sympathizing with others. Many do not like to be touched or cuddled with like other children do. They also frighten at the sound of a loud noise or a sudden change in smell, light or temperature.

Children with autism may have trouble speaking, depending on the severity of the autism. Some children with autism may not speak at all, while others often repeat words or phrases they hear, which is known as echolalia.

Children experiencing autism like predictable events. They like and accept routine and the same motions day to day are the best and most comfortable for them. Some children with autism may experience tics or other body spasms. These are usually jerky movements and can go from a few seconds long to a very long time.

What is a Migraine?

The Head Ache
Image via Wikipedia

A migraine, once thought to be a headache, is now considered to be a neurological disease. Migraines can be caused by many factors and have many symptoms. People taking regular headache medicine for a migraine can make the pain worse and more intense.

Symptoms of a migraine include sensitivity to light, mind-numbing pain, seeing spots and difficulty speaking. There are many factors that can trigger a migraine. Something as simple as a weather change can bring on a migraine in some, while in others it could be the menstrual cycle pattern. Food could play a part in someone getting a migraine. Certain foods may trigger the disease to activate.

These disabling headaches are most likely caused from problems with nerves and blood vessels in the head. Certain chemicals in the brain (dopamine and serotonin) may also cause migraines. These neurotransmitters may cause blood vessels to act abnormally if there are too many of them. Five phases of migraines have been identified: Prodome, Auras, Headache, Headache Termination and Postdrome.

Prodome is a series of warning symptoms that a migraine is coming on. Some may experience tiredness or tense muscles before a migraine arrives. Auras are common in people about to experience a migraine. Some see patterns, hallucinations or even have blind spots before a migraine occurs. When experiencing the Headache phase, many people feel pain on both sides of their head. Throbbing pain, nausea and vomiting may occur during this phase, which can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. Headache Termination can occur even if the person does not have their migraine treated. If able to fall asleep, that will get rid of the headache symptoms. The Postdrome phase occurs and may make a person feel ill and not up to their usual self. Being tired and having problems thinking are common in this phase.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The lymphatic system, lymph vessels and lymph ...
Image via Wikipedia

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a disorder in which the patient has extreme fatigue that doesn’t get better with rest. This disorder often worsens during physical or mental activities and the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is still unknown.

There are nine symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome: extreme tiredness, less of memory, enlarged lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle pain that cannot be explained, muscle pain that moves around, headaches, unable to sleep, and general fatigue. Other symptoms have also been reported, such as diarrhea, dizziness, earache, chills and shortness of breath.

The cause of chronic chronic fatigue syndrome is still a mystery, but many people think it may have a link to other disorders such as depression, allergies, hypotension, hypoglycemia or an immune system dysfunction. Chronic fatigue syndrome is common for people in their 40s and 50s, and more women are more likely to be diagnosed with this disorder than men. Chronic fatigue syndrome can lead to depression, missing work and social isolation, as well as other factors.

When seeing a doctor for this condition, make sure to write down any symptoms you are experiencing so that the doctor can better diagnose you. Also write down any questions you may have for the doctor. In order to be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, you must have unexplained fatigue for six or more months, and must also be suffering from four of the nine symptoms outlined above.

There is no specific testing done for chronic fatigue syndrome, so the doctor must rule out what else the problems could be from. Once diagnosed, there is no specific treatment other than a combination of treatments and lifestyle changes. You will need to learn how to reduce your fatigue by eliminating negative factors in your life such as stress. You will also want to make sure you get plenty of sleep and exercise. Keep your diet healthy and try not to overdo anything. Only you know how much your body can handle.
