Alternative medicine is a field that has traditionally been viewed with skepticism, but in recent years it has become a more mainstream and accepted approach to health care. Today, around
40 percent of adults and 12 percent of children in America use some form of alternative medicine, which is more than 30 thousand people. What is it about alternative medicine that is so appealing to all of these people?
Alternative medicine often offers a low cost approach to treating medical problems. People who are undergoing credit counseling or have found themselves in debt might be interested in new age solutions for this reason. Other people may find the resulting benefits to their overall health and fitness to be just as satisfying or even more so than traditional medical practices.
Who are the people deciding to go with alternative therapies? Research shows that people aged 40–60, women, and people with higher income levels or higher educational backgrounds are using these treatments more frequently. Occasionally, these people even use alternative medicines to replace conventional medical treatments. Some people combine non-traditional medicine with western medicine in order to curb side effects or to create a balanced wellness plan.
Many people use yoga, meditation, and many other therapies, such as those that utilize art and music, to promote better emotional and mental health. Some people simply take the time to focus and clear their minds instead of taking over-the-counter medication for headaches, and according to recent studies, this method proves to be just as effective. For others, root therapy and medicinal herbs could be a valuable and inexpensive solution for the same
problems.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) calls practices such as massage therapy, chiropractic therapy, and osteopathy “manipulative and body-based practices.” Even the people who take part in these practices, who otherwise may not be seeking alternative solutions to medical issues, can agree that their own favored alternative solutions are both relaxing and rewarding.
